Yes, but you must advance your argument on its own merits there’s no need to mention or provide counterpoints for the original viewpoint. Can I write a viewpoint responding to someone else's on the same topic? To allow for a diversity of voices in letters and viewpoints, we will give a higher priority to authors who have not been published in the past 30 days. Both letters to the editor and viewpoints count in that same tally. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, we are not always able to acknowledge content that is not published. It’s possible, too, that it didn't make the cut because of timeliness or having been addressed by another author with specific expertise. There can be a number of reasons opinion content is rejected: Perhaps it didn’t meet basic standards or have the elements we’re looking for (see the answers above). Be sure to offer a solution or recommendations to the issue you’re addressing and avoid going off on a tangent. Your opinion should be clearly stated (sort of like a thesis statement) and followed up with supporting facts (including links) or an easy-to-read personal narrative. Having an opinion is a first step, but just as important is direct and consistent messaging. It’s not easy writing a good letter or viewpoint. The best way to get your viewpoint or letter in on a specific date is to submit early. We’re happy to consider any request, however we generally schedule the section 2-3 weeks in advance and only have space for content on Thursdays and Sundays. Can my viewpoint or letter run in print on a certain date? Our process involves multiple staff members to ensure no one individual's implicit or explicit bias impacts what appears in the section. What are the basic standards for letters and viewpoints?Īll opinion content will be disqualified if it includes libel, personal attacks, racism, misogyny, homophobic/transphobic remarks, excessive profanity or inaccuracies. People with expertise will be given priority on a topic however, members of the general public will also have their opinions included as long as they meet our basic standards and there is no conflict of interest. We encourage our readers to write on any topic that interests them however, the LSJ will prioritize local and timely topics that are likely to have more of an impact on people in Greater Lansing. The LSJ opinion section generally will publish 5-6 viewpoints per week online most, but not all, appear in the print section also. Viewpoints are more in depth, generally 500 words, and must be submitted by a person with some sort of expertise on the topic - professional, volunteer or personal experience preferred. Letters should be 175 words or fewer and focus on a single topic. Letters to the editor are submissions from the general public, organized into a monthly online package that may also appear in print if space allows.
